Atlanta Race Massacre Walk

November 4, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Atlanta Race Massacre Walk

The Atlanta Massacre Riot of 1906 lasted for a period of three-days during which white mobs attacked Blacks at work, on streetcars, and patrolled neighborhoods.  The riots began after a power keg of incendiary reporting in newspapers of allegations of the rape of white women by Black men and other incidences of Black people acting “against” whites.  A contentious election employed race-baiting techniques and economic competition tied to racial fears erupted in this violet period.  Atlanta shut down for three days, people were afraid to come out of their homes.  This historical event was “forgotten” in Atlanta’s records and resurfaced and in 2006 after the Race Riot Remembrance Committee formed, held a number of public meetings and events, and brought this important history back to public consciousness.

Durning the walk, we will review historical events that lead to three days of rioting, learn about occurrences of violence and acts of resistance, who were the major players associated with the riots, and any results.
