Preserving Your History
July 7, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$10Preserving Your History
The goal of this curriculum is to help prepare residents who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color to utilize storytelling as a tool to advocate for preserving historically significant areas in their communities. One of the largest challenges facing many communities of color is the rapid gentrification that has more than doubled in the past 30 years (Smith et al., 2020). Gentrification has been linked to a myriad of health-related problems, including housing insecurity, food insecurity, homelessness, decreased social cohesion, mental health issues, and reinforced racial discrimination (Shmool et al., 2015; Wilder et al., 2017), with community elders often being the most vulnerable (Henig, 1981).
This curriculum contains four sequential lessons: introducing historic preservation, building the story of your community space, preserving your community space, and advocating for your community space. Each lesson is designed to take 60 minutes, with the first lesson taking 70 minutes to include time for pre-evaluation. Lessons are structured to be conducted in a group setting with a facilitator. The lessons may be completed in a single day workshop, or they can be completed on separate days.
